Transmission Upgrades Enhance Electric Reliability
(Energy News - September 2009)

Werner West-Gardner Park Project Wraps Up Ahead Of Schedule

American Transmission Co. recently energized 75 miles of a 345-kilovolt electric transmission line that extends from the Werner West Substation in Shawano County to the Gardner Park Substation located south of Wisconsin Public Service’s Weston Power Plant near Wausau. This project was put into service more than six months ahead of schedule.

The new transmission line, which is one of the highest-capacity lines in the state, was needed to help support output from WPS’s Weston 4. The transmission system carrying electricity from the Weston Plant since the 1950s was inadequate for delivering increased output from the new 500-megawatt plant that came online in 2008.

An Important Connection

The Werner West-Gardner Park line interconnects with a new 345-kilovolt line linking the Morgan Substation southwest of Oconto Falls to the Werner West Substation. Work continues in Shawano County between the Hwy. 22 and White Clay Substations in the Town of Washington. This segment of the Morgan-Werner transmission line is scheduled for completion later this year.

These transmission upgrades will help relieve congestion in the Green Bay and Fox Valley areas, helping ensure reliable electric service for customers in the future.
