Natural Gas Leaks Can Be Dangerous
(Energy News - July 2010)
If You Suspect A Problem, Call For Help
Do you know how to identify and respond to a natural gas leak outdoors? Understanding how to recognize a problem can help keep you and others safe.
Underground gas facilities are located almost everywhere — under streets and highways and around your business and home. WPS's natural gas delivery system has a track record of being safe and reliable. Crews regularly monitor, inspect and upgrade facilities. However, it is possible for leaks or other problems to occur.
These signs could indicate a leak or pipeline problem:
- A strong odor. Natural gas is colorless and odorless. Utilities add a harmless chemical odorant that smells like rotten eggs to the gas to make it detectable.
- A hissing sound around gas facilities or pipes.
- Dirt blowing in the air or water bubbling.
- Grass or plants turning brown over natural gas facilities.
If you observe any of these scenarios, play it safe. Stay away from the area and call the WPS emergency phone number at 800-450-7280. You also can call 911 or the number listed on the pipeline marker. Experienced professionals will check out the situation and take steps to ensure the area is safe.
Digging Precautions
Remember that you cannot see underground utility lines and pipes. Hitting them while digging can interrupt electric and/or natural gas service, damage equipment and cause injury — or death. If you do any digging at your business or home, be sure to call 811 at least three business days in advance. Crews will then visit your site to locate and mark underground utilities for free.
