The Campground Owners' Guide To Reselling Electricity To Campers
(Energy News - July 2010)
Campsites with electricity hookups offer convenience and make possible many amenities people are accustomed to at home.
It is important for campground owners to understand the rules they must follow when they resell electricity to campers.
- The Right Way
- Campground owners can charge campers a flat fee for sites with electricity, including different flat fees for campers with different needs.
- The Wrong Way
- Campground owners should not charge campers on a per-kilowatt basis. Electric meters are acceptable to track the amount of electricity campers are using. However, meters cannot be used to charge campers based on their actual usage.
For campground owners to be able to charge based on electric use, they have to meet the same state regulatory requirements as WPS. - Rules Apply To Other Resellers
- These rules also apply to other businesses, such as apartment owners who pay WPS for all of their building's electricity use and charge tenants a fee.
