Fire Department Training Burns and Demolition
Safety Checklist
Please check the following steps before proceeding with any training burns or demolitions. If you answer NO to any of the following questions, the training burn or demolition should be postponed.
Remember… failure to disconnect or remove all electric and natural gas facilities is extremely hazardous and could result in serious injury or death.
Electric Facilities
- Has the electric meter been removed?
- Have all underground and overhead electric wires attached to the structure been removed? Sometimes the electric meter has been removed but the electric wires are still attached and energized. Electric wires must be removed before burning the structure.
- Have all underground and overhead electric wires been removed from surrounding area? Any electric wires in the work area are hazardous. Contact with wires by firefighters or equipment could result in serious injury or death.
- Have you requested to have underground facilities located by Diggers Hotline at least 4 days before the burn or demolition date?
Natural Gas Facilities
- Has the customer's natural gas pipe been disconnected from the structure?
- Has the utility's natural gas service pipe at the building been removed?
- Has the natural gas meter been removed?
- Have you requested to have underground facilities located by Diggers Hotline at least 4 days before the burn or demolition date?
- Are other gas services or meters adjacent to the structure protected from extreme heat or damage as a result of this training burn or demolition?
