Celebrating Arbor Day
Arbor Day is observed across the U.S., encouraging tree planting and tree care. Founded by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska in 1872, it continues to be celebrated each year on the last Friday in April.
On Arbor Day, WPS employees, in partnership with Asplundh Tree Expert Company, teach grade-school children how to plant the right tree in the right location – and how to care for the trees as they grow.
Would you like your class to participate in an Arbor Day planting with WPS, contact your local WPS Community Relations Leader.
Arbor Day at the Paine Art Center
Oshkosh Mayor Paul Esslinger read a proclamation identifying April 28th as the city's official Arbor Day. WPS teamed up with the American Transmission Company to sponsor Arbor Day at Oshkosh's Paine Art Center and Gardens. More than 500 fourth-grade students from all Oshkosh schools attend this outdoor environmental learning event that offers hands-on activities ranging from lumberjacking history to tree planting.
WPS was awarded a Tree Line USA flag by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, along with a similar award going to the City of Oshkosh for its work in keeping the tree canopy of the city blooming. Students were able to learn about all of the significant activities needed to win the awards, along with discovering what it takes to properly plant a Dogwood tree.
