Science, Technology, Engineering & Math
Science, technology, engineering and math may not be exciting words for your students – but the possibilities within these subjects are extraordinary. Help your students discover ideas that can lead to a promising future.
Boy Scout Electricity Merit Badge Clinic
The Electricity Merit Badge is hard to earn without proper guidance. Since 1952, WPS has helped more than 3,000 Boy Scouts earn this important badge. Several weeks before the clinic, scouts receive kits that help introduce them to the topic of electricity. Then, at the clinic, WPS line electricians, engineers and volunteers help them learn:
- How to read an electric meter and calculate a bill
- How to draw floor plans of a typical house showing various electrical symbols,
- Why a fuse blows and how to safely change one,
- What happens when you overload a household circuit,
- How to rescue a person in contact with a live wire in the home
- How to administer proper first-aid treatment
To learn more about having an Electricity Merit Badge Clinic in your area, contact your local WPS Community Relations Leader.
Einstein Project
The Einstein Project is a nonprofit school/community partnership dedicated to improving the quality of science education for Pre-K through 8 students in Wisconsin. WPS is a long-time supporter of The Einstein Project. To access educational resources from The Einstein Project, visit The Einstein Project Website.
Energy Careers
WPS is a member of the Center for Energy Workforce Development. Together, our organizations are trying to increase awareness of energy career paths in the energy industry. Energy jobs offer promising opportunities. The industry is expected to grow in the coming years, especially in renewable, energy efficiency and advanced energy technology. At the same time, many employees in the energy industry will be nearing retirement. So energy companies will need skilled workers. Invite your middle school or high school students to explore the interactive Center for Energy Workforce Development Website.
In addition, WPS employees will give career presentations to school groups or attend career expos for students. Contact your local WPS Community Relations Leader to have WPS come into your classroom or participate in your career fair.
Energy Tech Camp
The Get into Energy Tech Camp, sponsored by WPS, lets middle school students explore future careers in the energy industry, related to renewable energy, natural gas and electricity.
- Renewable Energy: Students explore renewable energy technologies, the idea of sustainability and how to use less energy at home and at school. They also do exciting projects, like racing solar cars.
- Natural Gas: Students learn about natural gas and try some of the tools a gas operator uses on the job.
- Electricity: Students learn about the work of a line electrician by trying on the gear and using the tools of the trade to do things like open a fuse.
Get into Energy Tech camp is held in partnership with local technical colleges. For more information, contact your local WPS Community Relations Leader.
Project Lead the Way
