Trees cause about 30 percent of all electric service interruptions on the WPS distribution system. WPS spends about $5.5 million each year to trim or remove trees to prevent these interruptions.
Trees are trimmed near power lines every three years in residential areas and every six years in rural areas. The line clearance work is done for WPS by companies with specialized equipment and trained personnel.
